A waterfall in Irondequoit?
Somewhere or another in my research, as I was compiling a list of all the east-side parks, I must have seen some reference to a Densmore Park in Irondequoit. So I added it to my list and it has been there every since. But at some point I must have tried to find that reference again and could not. So I put a question mark by its name.
Today I decided to tackle a few more parks and once again tried to find a reference to Densmore Park, the theory being it must be out there somewhere or I wouldn't have found it the first time.
Once again I was unsuccessful. But the references I did find all talked about a waterfall. Go figure. So I decided that even though Densmore Park ... isn't, I wanted to track down that waterfall.
Densmore Creek runs east behind the Legacy at Cranberry Landing senior living community, on Norton Street. The falls occur just before it peters out at its far eastern end. Get to them by parking in the Legacy's lot and finding the trail head at the northeast corner of their property. It's a very short walk to get to the falls, but online sources seem to indicate that the trail continues to their base, although I couldn't find it.
The falls themselves are only about 15 feet high and because this summer has been very dry, they were pretty, but not very impressive. I've seen a lot of photos that confirm that in springtime they're much more interesting.
It was a nice wander.
McAvoy Memorial Park
McAvoy Park, at the corner of Winton Rd. and Empire Blvd., is one of Irondequoit's most beautiful sports complexes.
It was updated several years ago and now features contains two softball fields, one multi-purpose rectangular field (football, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse) and one medium-sized field, all lighted and with a synthetic playing surface. There's plenty of bleacher seating for spectators, a nice snack bar and umbrella tables, and restrooms. A small playground at the northwest corner of the park is probably visited mostly by antsy kids who'd much rather try out its many slides rather than watch mom or dad play softball.
